| Last Updated: July 31, 2022

Looking for a Jeep Wrangler trailer - a camper that you can easily tow with your prized possession? There are many to choose from.

Jeep Wranglers are among the toughest type of land vehicles, and have earned their reputation due to the extreme performance on all types of terrains. From sloppy hills to harsh sandy desserts, thick forests, or a straight road, Jeep Wranglers can move everywhere.

This is why they make an excellent choice of vehicle for towing a trailer. But what are the best travel trailers for your jeep Wrangler?

In this article, we look at some of the best models on the market, that you can easily tow with your Jeep Wrangler. As well as reviewing specific models we've included a guide for what makes a trailer ideal for being towed by a Jee Wrangler.

There's also an FAQ section to round things up so you should be well equipped with all the knowledge you'll need for when you go shopping for your trailer.

What Makes a Travel Trailer Ideal for a Jeep Wrangler?

Travel trailers pair up excellently with Jeep Wranglers. Together, they form a combination that's both convenient and comfortable. You literally have a small house on 4 wheels that can reach places many other trailers can't.

There are a few features that ensure your trailer is best suited to your Jeep Wrangler for optimal performance. These are discussed below.

Towing Capacity

Although Jeep Wranglers are sturdy vehicles capable of moving through the roughest of terrains, it is always advisable to attach a trailer that lies within their towing capacity. Usually, the towing capacities of Jeep Wranglers lie within the range of 2000 lbs. to 3500 lbs. with variations existing in different models.

The towing capacity could easily be found by going through the Jeep’s manual. If a higher weight is attached to the Wrangler, it may be able to tow it along smooth roads. But as soon as you go off-road, not only would the Jeep struggle to pull your traveler, it might also get stuck in marshes or wet mud under the influence of weight.

Trailer Design

Even though all construction designs falling within the towing capacity of the wrangler can be pulled, there are a few more favorable trailer designs. These include Pop up, Hybrid Trailers, Tear Drop, and Airstream Trailers.

These lightweight campers are built on the principles of taking maximum advantage of a small space and avoid adding extra weight or unnecessary heavy equipment. Their shapes are such that they reduce air resistance and provide for decreases friction and easy pulling. As a result, your Jeep Wrangler experiences lesser strain and drives easily.

Have Sway Control and Active Brake Controllers

Two of the crucial things to ensure safety while using a travel trailer are sway control and brake controllers

Sway control ensures that neither your trailer or jeep gets pushed around by a strong wind. Swaying can get out of control, and in such cases, sway control makes sure that your trailer and jeep are too buffeted to be affected by a strong wind.

Break controllers allow you to control the brakes of the trailer from the jeep. The signals can be sent directly from the jeep so that both the jeep and the trailer stop at the same time. On sloppy terrains, these brakes are very useful in preventing the trailer from bumping into the jeep.

Our Review

The Forest River Flagstaff is one of those camper trailers that could be towed by any Jeep Wrangler. It is lightweight and doesn't need special, more powerful wranglers for towing. It has a compact design that makes efficient use of space.

Even with such a low weight, it houses a comfortable double bed, storage area, and an outside kitchen. The storage is built above the bed in the walls surrounding it, which is again a very efficient utilization of space.

The trailer is 11’ 4” long and would easily fit in a single trailer parking space. The kitchen is well-equipped with a fridge, a wash skin, and a gas griddle. The Jeep Wrangler trailer also comes with a built-in television for entertainment, so you won't miss any games.

There are doors on both of the longer sides of the trailer to allow cross-ventilation. The outside kitchen might be a problem in terms of access, but it really is a small deal. Also, with the griddle outside, you won’t have to deal with the smell of cooking stuffed inside the small indoors.

All in all, the River Flagstaff is a worthy choice of trailers for those who plan on spending most of their time outside before retrieving to the comfort of personal space for a good night’s rest.

Our Review

The Lance 1475 is another ideal set up as a Jeep Wrangler trailer. The trailer is fully equipped with all the necessities.

There's a queen-sized bed surrounded with large windows on all three sides, all with a nightshade that lets air in without invasion of privacy. They also give the inside a well-lit, and ventilated feel.

The kitchen and living area is compact, and there's no dinette but instead 2 lounge swivel chairs and a fold-up small, dining table.

The well-equipped kitchen has tons of storage above and below the workstation and is characterized by a 3 burner stove, an oven, and a microwave. There is also a decent-sized refrigerator with another storage cupboard next to it with adjustable shelves.

The bathroom on the trailer is well lit and has a shower, a toilet, a wash sink, and even a vanity. Meanwhile, the interior has power outlets, as well as many LED lights.

Best Jeep Wrangler Trailer for the Money:
Highland Expedition Outfitters T3

Best for the Money: Highland Expedition Outfitters T3

What we love

  • 56x96” mattress in the rooftop camp
  • Extremely lightweight; weighs only 600lbs
  • Supports a rooftop camp over a wide storage space
  • Strong sturdy and durable, rustproof aluminum construction
  • 16-inch ground clearance for moving over rocky paths without experiencing damage

Quick Specs

  • Sleeps: 2-3
  • Number of Floorplans: 1
  • Length: 60”
  • Width: 68”
  • Weight: 600 lbs.

Our Review

The Highland Expedition Outfitters T3 is rather an interesting model. It brings you the real raw adventure of the outdoors, and such lightweight will allow you to get pretty much anywhere your Jeep Wrangler can manage.

The trailer is a very solid build. It has rust-proof aluminum construction overall, which endures rough, muddy patches, thick forests as well rain. The 16-inch ground clearance ensures the trailer does not hit protruding rocks on a rocky path.

The trailer is designed so that it has a square-like storage box at the bottom. On top of the box is a rooftop camp. The mattress lines the floor of the camp. And the camp is accessible from the outside via a ladder.

There are no dedicated or organized storage areas, neither a toilet nor a kitchen, so you would have to carry all your camping equipment with you, probably in a rooftop cargo bag. But don't let this put you off, because it's a great little trailer that gives you what you need most, a shelter.

The Highland Expedition T3 isn't the type of trailer for those who demand luxury, but if you really want to experience off-road camping, you have to go lightweight, and this trailer will get anywhere your Jeep Wrangler can manage.

Can Any Travel Trailer Be Towed Behind a Jeep Wrangler?

No, not all travel trailers are towable by Jeep Wranglers. Although Jeep Wranglers are designed to take on rough and tough usage, they still have their limitations. These limitations usually come in the form of a towing capacity, which is measured in terms of weight. They can only tow trailers adding up to a total loaded weight of 4000 lbs. While small trailers meet these criteria, larger trailers do not.

And, for optimal fuel efficiency and a smooth drive, jeep wranglers are preferably used to tow trailers that have a shape that plays a role in reducing air friction.

Cautious Considerations to Keep in Mind

Although tempting, travel trailers do have certain areas that need cautious treading. Being mindful of these considerations would not only help you better control your trailer but will also make for a hitch-free and enjoyable travel experience.

Overloading

When buying a travel trailer, be sure to select a model that can easily carry the weight of all your belongings. The carrying capacities should be given serious consideration. Overloading beyond the capacity might result in your trailer either running into your wrangler, breaking the safety harness, or it might just get stuck in soft mud.

Ground Clearance

Ground clearance is another very important consideration, especially when intended for a trip along rocky pathways. Higher ground clearance is always advisable to prevent the floor of the trailer bumping into rocks scattered throughout the path. These rocks can be sharp and large and can do serious damage, so a clearance of at least around 15-16” is important.

Jeep Wrangler Trailers FAQs

Deciding on one travel trailer is no easy business. There are a lot of questions that may arise regarding them. These might not be answered in the above discussion but are similarly important. In this section, we answer some of the most sought-after questions to give you a deeper understanding of the matter.

Can a Jeep Wrangler Pull a Travel Trailer?

Yes, a Jeep Wrangler can pull a travel trailer as long as it weighs within 4000lbs. of weight. But this is not the dry weight; rather, it is the total loaded weight resulting after all of your supplies are placed on board. Larger travel trailers housing heavy equipment are not towable by jeep wrangler and put a strain on it, which might result in problems midway.

Can a Jeep Wrangler Pull 5000 Pounds?

No, the maximum total towing capacity for a regular jeep wrangler is within 4000lbs. Any trailer exceeding this value is not advisable to be towed by a jeep wrangler as it would not only put a strain on the engine but would also result in poor utilization of fuel.

Why is Jeep Wrangler Towing Capacity so Low?

Jeep Wranglers are a sturdy ride, but they have certain features that limit their towing capacity. These include springs not build for very rough use, such as Marshmallow springs.

Marshmallow springs can endure harshness up to a certain level but not for extreme supporting and pulling use. Moreover, jeep wranglers have mediocre brakes. While these suffice for traveling through sloppy hails and slippery lands or sandy desserts, they can only support the weight up to a certain extent.

Can You Increase the Towing Capacity of a Jeep Wrangler?

The towing capacity of jeep wranglers cannot be extended. This is because the limitations are related to the structure and durability of the engine. The engines can support the load up to some extent. For higher towing capacity, either specialized jeeps are used, or heavier vehicles are employed.

Do All Jeep Wranglers Come With a Hitch?

No, not all jeep wranglers come with a hitch. A hitch is crucial for connecting the trailer to the jeep wrangler. For those jeep models that do not come with a hitch, a receiver hitch could be attached to the jeep to enhance its versatility. The hitches are easily available on the market, and an appointment with a good mechanic is all that is needed to set you up.

Travel Trailers for Jeep Wranglers - Getting Into Places Others Can't

Jeep Wranglers are a popular option for towing trailers. Their off-road capabilities and towing capacity make them ideal for towing your trailer and getting off into the wild.

All of the above are great trailers and will do the trick for you on your road trips. Of course, size is a premium, so depending on the type of base you want for your trips, will determine the trailer you go for.

That said, we're sure whichever trailer you go for, the life experiences you'll gain from your new home on wheels will be amazing. Enjoy!
